Darteq and Uppsala University organize a summer workshop “GIS and Digital Cultural Heritage” in Viggiano – South Italy 5th-10th August 2013

In this workshop participants will be introduced to the basics of GIS and the main programs used in the field. The workshop will also provide an overview of other applications with great potential for digital cultural heritage. After completing the workshop, the participants will gain transferable skills in GIS, data analysis and a knowledge base of 3D modeling. Participants will be involved in many activities delivered by experienced lecturers. The main objective of the workshop is to acquire some basic knowledge in GIS, data analysis and digital tools to valorize the cultural heritage. The participants will work in the historical center of Viggiano, a small village in Basilicata Region with an old and fascinating history. The urban structure is medieval but with numerous stone portals from the XIX Century preserved. Most of them have wonderful keystones with figures and dates of construction. During the workshop we will use this wonderful heritage to create maps and databases of the stone portals, 3D models of some portals and keystones and a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) of Viggiano historical center. The final step will be
a proposal project for the promotion of this interesting local heritage.
